| Taking in the news from the UK last week that their security forces had unraveled a soon to be executed terrorist plot to blow up in midflight as many as ten jumbo jets en route to the US was cause for much thought and concern in the wake of our country's almost five year War on Terror. Last night I had the opportunity to view the movie World Trade Center which served as a reminder for the context of that war.
Who is the enemy? Founded on the trust placed largely on the Republican Party to wage an aggressive war on terror, these elected GOP officials have enjoyed a free ride in the House, Senate and the White House. Whenever anyone has stood up to question the direction or execution of that war, they've been painted as soft and an enabler of the enemy. Perhaps it is time for an honest assessment of this Republican team's efforts on our behalf to make our homeland safer.
Even our own military leaders suggest Iraq has fallen into Civil War. WMD or not, we did remove an admittedly evil dictator but in its place is civil unrest that Iraq cannot contain. News of the ever escalating daily violence in Iraq certainly supports asking whether our efforts there have made that country and the world a safer place. Meanwhile the UK plot demonstrates that terrorist training camps and Al-Quaida operatives are alive and well within Pakistan's borders and our leaders have been ineffective in pulling the reigns on the threat posed by North Korea and Iran and their expressed nuclear ambitions.
This country has sacrificed dearly, both monetarily and in loss of life of our troops. In waging this aggressive war on terror so heavily on the Iraqi front, isn't it time to ask if our nations leaders really know who the enemy is? How many Americans will be brave enough to ask the hard questions when we return to the polls this November? This group in Washington has had ten years in congress and 6 years in the White House to get it right. Enough is enough... It's time for a change in leadership and direction and elect leaders who know who the enemy really is! |
